A Mill Restoration and Redevelopment Project: A Business Proposal and Plan

Deana Lorenzo, Anna McCabe, Holly McLaughlin, Emily Meade

The Five-2-Farm non-profit, and its parent community organization Grow L+A, seeks to transform the currently empty and unused space of Bates Mill 5 into a vibrant and energized food hub for the city of Lewiston. Located downtown in the mill district, the building once played a key role in the economic growth and stability of the city. Through renovating and repurposing Mill 5, Five-2-Farm hopes to restore the Mill’s key role in the community.

Our task to the Five-2-Farm initiative was threefold. We were to research and assess the demand for a food hub in Lewiston, research funding for the space, and find case studies of other food hub or mill restoration models, both successful and unsuccessful. Our research culminated in the production of a business plan. The purpose of this business plan is to appeal to possible investors by clarifying the execution and feasibility of Five-2-Farm’s vision. We address these topics through a thorough discussion of the funding needed to convert and repurpose Bates Mill 5.
