US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

The EPA is the federal governing agency in environmental regulation. The Agency sets standards, administers penalties for non-compliance, and cleans up contaminated sites.  The Agency is divided into 10 regions with headquarters in Washington, DC.  The Androscoggin River is located in Region 1, which is based in Boston, MA.  The EPA has done work along the river to clean up old industrial sites, and regulate the facilities left on the river. The website contains scientific information, permitting information (for discharges), as well as general watershed pollution information (see the water division).

Search 'Androscoggin River' on the website for more information or click on the link to Brownfields and Superfund sites to see some of the clean-up work being done on the river.
